Glossary of the International Society of Exposure Science

The International Society for Exposure Science (ISES) and its Nomenclature Committee have been involved since the mid-1990s in an ongoing effort to harmonize exposure science terminology with the risk-assessment terminology project of International Programme for Chemical Safety (ICPS). IPCS is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). ISES has adopted the IPCS glossary as its official glossary and maintains an effort to expand and update the terminology. To ensure consistency of language in papers submitted to and published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology (JESEE), the ISES will soon be using the peer-review process of JESEE to encourage authors to adhere to this glossary.

The glossary is provided as a service to the scientific community.

There is a feature article in the JESEE that provides the current glossary and describes how the glossary will be updated over time to continue to reflect the latest usage and to maintain international harmonization of exposure terminology. Interested scientists are welcome to join us in this important effort.
